First, a disclaimer: This is the sort of statement Lil Wayne could easily take back if he ever felt less loving or more protective of his release schedule. “What? I’m releasing an album of love songs? Man, this was blown completely out of proportion. I’m releasing an album of songs I love. Like a covers album. It is a covers album.” Or: “Album of love songs? Psh. I meant it’s a labor of love. A project for me. Like Rebirth.” (Too-easy joke.)
None of that’s happened yet, mind you. The closest he’s come is clarifying stuff in the MTV interview the announcement came from:
What I mean by my version of love songs is meaning they’re not saying, ‘I love you.’ It’s all material I did when I was locked up.
Love songs that don’t say “I love you,” and material written when Wayne presumably had lots of time to write. Got it. They could be either skewed love songs, bitter love songs, hyper-specific love songs or not love songs at all. They’ll also probably have seven innuendos per verse, but you knew that.
