The Popdust Files: drake, upcoming albums
A Drake without sad would be like….what? An Eminem without angry? A Nicki Minaj without accents? A Snoop Dogg without weed? A Wiz Khalifa without weed? Well, we might find out just what that unlikely deficit would feel like with Drake’s upcoming third album, which the Toronto rapper says is going to be a lot less mopey than his previous effort. “A lot of Take Care, it’s down,” the rapper explained in a recent conference call. “Now I’m in a very, very, very, very different place than I’ve ever been, really focused on myself, really focused on my health, my body, my mind, really wanting to be the best I can possibly be…I’m in a different mindset now that I’m very proud of.”
Well. This is interesting, and we certainly don’t wish Drake to experience unnecessary life badness just for the sake of his music, but we don’t really know how to feel about the prospect of a happy Drake. Is he gonna start sounding like Travie McCoy or Waka Flocka Flame or something? Those guys seem like they’re pretty content with their respective places in the world. We’re just not sure that sampling the Sesame Street theme song and interpolating the chorus to “Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbows” is really playing to Drizzy’s strengths. (It’ll make for a much less compelling Halloween mask, at the very least.)
