Whoa Whoa Whoa: Giorgio Moroder Wants To Work With Rihanna And Nicki Minaj?

Dance music owes a lot to Giorgio Moroder, both in general and specifically for his era-defining work with the late Donna Summer. And it’s perhaps never been easier to notice the debt than now, when dance and pop are practically synonymous and when artists regularly top the charts with tracks that, give or take a few synthesizer advances, would make just as much sense in a disco as a club. Moroder never quite went away–he’s produced plenty of other artist, though none as iconic as Summer–so it’s not surprising that he’s got projects in the works. What might be a little surprising is who he wants involved. He’s quoted in Gigwise, toward the end of a Summer tribute, saying this:

I’m probably going to do some songs featuring a singer – a female or group. I like to work with female singers, which I’ve done a lot in my life. Rihanna would be my favourite, also Nicki Minaj would be great – those are the top girls who I would like to work with.

We are all in favor of this! Whatever Moroder wants, Moroder should get at this point. He’s earned that and more. But more pertinently, it’s about time the current lineup of dance-pop producers (Guetta, Harris, Stargate, Martin, sometimes Chase and Status if you’re lucky and/or British) got a shakeup, preferably from someone with a long, long resume. It’s probably too late into Rihanna and (maybe) Nicki’s careers–not to mention Moroder’s–for any such collaboration to be an iconic, defining teamup. But it’s definitely not too late to produce a killer track or two. Or more. More would be good.
