Man, was “Change Nothing” really that terrible a song? Sounded like a pretty innocuous, standard Idol original song, but perhaps the fact that Phillip Phillips’ original “Home” actually didn’t suck (and kinda sounded like something he might have recorded on his own anyway) cast it in a particularly unfavorable light. Anyway, what seemed like a decently close battle up until that point between Phillips and Idol runner-up Jessica Sanchez now looks a lot like a blowout, not only given Phillips’ easy-in-retrospect victory in the show proper, but now his immolation of Sanchez in that other reliable assessor of public opinion—the iTunes charts.
Not only does Phillip Phillips currently boast the song on top the iTunes charts—the original “Home,” which really might be the least shitty Idol original in the show’s history—he has an impressive total of nine songs throughout the top 100, including his covers of “We’ve Got Tonight” (#12), “Volcano” (#16) and “Stand By Me” (#27). Meanwhile, Sanchez is nowhere to be found, with her original or with any of her multitude of covers. (By contrast, last year’s runner-up Lauren Alaina sold 400,000 copies of her finale original “Like My Mother Does,” good enough to get it to #20 on the charts in its first week.)
It appears the people have spoken on this one. Sorry, Jessica—the tour’ll probably be fun, at least. (And she promises her next single will be “100%” her, so that’ll be fun too.)
