Do you want to read an awesome in-depth piece on an awesome person? Of course you do, even more so considering that person’s Miranda Lambert, consistently among the more interesting and/or badass people in country music whether solo or with her group Pistol Annies. W Magazine knows this well. Oh, the article’s got chaff–country music is almost certainly not the only genre that “exists in an old-school, pre-Napster, radio-rules-and-fans-buy-records time warp,” even if that were even 100% true–but it’s also got lots of fantastic stuff, the sort of thing that will make you regret whatever life choices brought you your current circle of friends but not Lambert’s. (We’re only slightly exaggerating.) Check out, then scroll down for some highlights.
Miranda Lambert is cool with Taylor Swift.
Lambert doesn’t quite think she’s a country artist so much as a pop artist, which is more or less true, but she likes that Swift got big because she can “show people [country artists are] not cheesy” and because if people look her stuff up on YouTube, it can help them find other country artists, perhaps her, perhaps others. We just tried it with “Back to December, mind you, and there was only one non-Swift, definitely country video (Sugarland, which makes a lot of sense actually) among the likes of Vanessa Hudgens and Avril Lavigne and, because she always shows up, Adele. The sentiment’s what counts.
Miranda Lambert’s gotten as big as she is despite a few double standards.
OK, in spite of Nashville Star, too. But one suspects that history’s far from the reason things like this happen:
between Lambert’s gun-toting, out-for-justice side and her pink-is-my-favorite-color side is particularly vivid. “It’s tough for a girl to be a headliner in country music,” she says, after a pause. “For instance, I can’t get a sponsor.” She points to her beer T-shirt. [ed. note: "beer" in lots of typefaces! The shirt is drunk on fonts, perhaps?] “I love alcohol! You would think a beer company would sponsor me.” Lambert gets up to leave. She does her own hair and makeup for every show. “I’m my own damn sponsor,” Lambert says, rather proudly.
Miranda Lambert once told Lady Gaga to turn her cane into a flask.
What, you want more? You’re not sufficiently impressed by the fact that Miranda Lambert once told Lady Gaga to turn her cane into a flask? (It was during the Grammys. Gaga was apparently nice about it. As anyone should be.)
