One of Katy Perry’s greatest strengths as a pop star has always been her willingness to not take herself too seriously. While her pop peers like Lady Gaga or Beyoncé might be concerned with making these big, occasionally album-wide statements and really expressing themselves through their music, Katy’s cool singing silly pop songs about Daisy Dukes and skinny dipping and alien sex and whatnot, and that sense of care-free fun comes through in her music videos and live shows and general persona. It can be a refreshing change of pace from all the Adele and Gotye and whatnot.
Well, it used to be, anyway. According to an interview in L’Uomo Vogue, Katy plans on being frivolous no more—that’s right, Kitty Kat’s going dark on her new album. “It will be a much darker album than the previous one,” Perry promises. “It was inevitable, after what I went through…If I had a time machine and could go back in time, I would. But I can’t, so you’ll discover another part of me.” This is interesting not only because we have absolutely no idea what a “dark” Katy Perry looks like (well, aside from her gothy makeup in the “Wide Awake” video), but because it appears that Katy now talks only in song lyrics from her previous hits. (We suppose that’s a phase that every artist has to go through at some point.)
While we’re intrigued at the idea of Dark Katy Perry—will she work with Trent Reznor? Will she cover “Jar of Hearts?” Will she start dating Marilyn Manson?—we hope she doesn’t lose that bubblegum love entirely. Balance, you know. It’s important in all things.
