The Elantra Touring version of Hyundai’s previous-generation compact was (and remains) one of our favorite small, cheap wagons.
So, we’re not surprised to see a five-door variant of the current-generation Hyundai Elantra debut at the 2012 Chicago Auto Show. What you may not have seen coming was the coupe version of Hyundai’s fluidically sculptured sedan but that, too, was unwrapped at the show.
The Elantra Coupe doesn’t differ dramatically from the Elantra Sedan we tested last year. In fact, about the only measurable differences are the removal of a pair of doors and the addition of the Genesis Coupe’s “Coupe” badge. Power, fuel economy, and tech remain the same for the 2013 Elantra Coupe, only now instead of targeting the Honda Civic Sedan in its promotional materials, Hyundai can also target prospective buyers of the Civic Coupe.
The Elantra GT, as the five-door is called, is a bit more dramatic in its departure from the sedan variant. Essentially a tweaked and rebadged version of Hyundai’s world market i30, the GT features unique sheet metal with a more aggressive front end and a more bulbous hatchback silhouette. Expect the same 1.8-liter, front-wheel-drive power train that motivates the Elantra sedan and coupe models.
However, in the cabin the GT gains a new trick with the addition of the Hyundai’s Blue Link telematics and infotainment system (which debuted on the Veloster). The Elantra GT also falls just shy of the coupe’s and sedan’s 40mpg high-water mark, only reaching 39mpg on the highway and 28 mpg in the city.
